The First Appointment

Most people say that seeing a counsellor was not as difficult as they first thought. We just sit down and have a chat (as two friends might) about how things have been in your life, and go from there.

At Morpeth Counselling the focus is on finding the right tools to move on, being proactive about taking control of your life. It’s not just about talking about issues, but actually doing something constructive about them. Sometimes I might suggest different tools or techniques that have worked for me, such as mindfulness (see “What is Mindfulness“) and you can try them out for yourself to see if they help. By talking to someone qualified, issues that may feel overwhelming can often be resolved and strategies put in place to deal with life in the future.

You don’t have to be seriously ill or feel like your life is completely falling apart to see a counsellor. In fact, it’s best to see someone BEFORE things get too much out of control.

It doesn’t mean failure to see a counsellor!

In his book ‘A Better Life’, Craig Hamilton (ABC Sports Commentator and mental health advocate) says that some of us would “rather die” than admit to needing help. He says that we can attempt to bury raw and dangerous emotions under “too much alcohol, drug taking, excessive gambling, too much commitment to work – any number of addictions. Anything to avoid admitting or finding the truth”.

“It’s like having termites in your house,”  he says.

“Deal with it early and the house can be saved. Ignore it and hope it goes away, hope it will miraculously disappear if you don’t mention it and pretend it doesn’t exist, and the walls will come crashing down.”
